Abstract

Introduction: Mesotherapy is a widely used technique in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of various cutaneous and body conditions; however, its safety remains controversial due to the occurrence of local and systemic adverse events.

Objective: To characterize adverse events associated with mesotherapy in patients treated at a private clinic in Luque, Paraguay, during 2023–2024.

Materials and Methods: Observational, descriptive, and retrospective cross-sectional study based on the review of medical records from 18 patients who underwent mesotherapy. Sociodemographic and clinical variables, as well as post-procedural adverse events, were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Results: A total of 61% of patients presented at least one adverse event, predominantly local complications. The most frequent events were nodules (28%) and local inflammation (17%), followed by infections (11%). Systemic events were less frequent (22%), including somnolence, weakness, and urticaria.

Conclusion: Although mesotherapy is widely used in aesthetic medicine, it is not free of risks. Local mild to moderate adverse events predominate, highlighting the need for standardized protocols and strengthened safety measures in clinical practice.
